On Monday, 22 February 1909, Dr Wigan suffered a seizure whilst at 'Woodville', and although rushed to 'Southall' for medical attention, he died there later that day (Armidale Express 23rd February 1909). His widow, Evelyn, married Donald Munro Shand in May 1927, three months before Dr James Samuel Frederick Barnet, then residing with his family at 'Southall', had a tragic accident in an upper bedroom. Well-experienced in electrical therapy, the doctor was endeavouring to relieve an attack of lumbago using this treatment, when the telephone rang. Caught off his guard, Dr Barnet automatically picked up the receiver, which as local electrician John R. Spark explained, provided an 'earthed metal contact' to cause the doctor's instant death

During the 1930's, Dr Hubert Richard Joseph Harris and his family lived in 'Southall', but in June 1938, Evelyn Shand sold 'Southall' to H.M. King George VI, as represented by the Department of Education for £2617. (Mr Smith, Mr Jones and a Time of Bliss: An outline history of S.H. Smith House, Armidale. 1987. The S.H. Smith House complex, which included 'Southall' was purchased by the Coop family in 2000 from the University of New England. Southall now serves as the head office for the Southall Group - an entrepreneurial business collective.
